Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is known as the greatest 3200 metre handicap horse–race in the world. The cup is part of the Spring Racing Carnival. Australians know this race as the race that stops a nation. TV screens are turned to the race all over Australia as people from Cairns to Coober Pedy, celebrate the Melbourne Cup race with champagne breakfasts and barbecues.
The cup is run at Flemington Race course on the first Tuesday of November. Melbourne residents have the day off work as it is a public holiday, however all the shops and restaurants are still open for business. People from all over the world travel to Melbourne for this event and usually stay for about a week as the race is a part of a 50 day Spring Racing Carnival.
Horses are not the only attraction during these events; fashion is also a major part of the carnival. Everyone dresses for the races, some in the latest designer clothes others as zany as they can.
Accommodation in Melbourne for this event is often booked out a year in advance. Book as early as you can to avoid disappointment and if you happen to be travelling to Melbourne during November for other reasons besides the Melbourne Cup try to book at least 3 months before the race.
