Australian Rules Football
Melbourne loves sport but especially Australian Rules Football. Aussie Rules, as it is commonly known, was originally most popular in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. The New South Wales and Queensland teams in existence today were either initially Victorian teams that relocated or more recently established clubs. Football has been played at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) since 1897 and was originally introduced at the oval to keep the Cricketers fit in the winter months. Melbournians have always been very passionate about the game and this enthusiasm is now spreading around the country. Victoria still has more teams than any other state, so the city has an influx most weekends from interstate teams and their fans filling much of Melbourne's accommodation. There are three venues in Melbourne and the surrounding area. The MCG (slightly SE of the City), Etihad Stadium (just SW of the city in Docklands) and the Skilled Stadium in Geelong (3/4 of an hour SW of Melbourne).
