Australia Day
The 26th of January 1788 was the official day that Captain Arthur Phillip became the Governor of the new colony of New South Wales. This date became a celebration day that was eventually named Australia Day. It is a day Australians are awarded, Orders of Australia from the Queen, the Australians of the Year are named and mass Citizenship Ceremonies take place across the country. There are music concerts, breakfasts, dinners, ocean swimming races, a wreath laying ceremony, a flag raising ceremony, Bar B Ques, big bands, RAAF aerial displays and a people's march. The Fireworks are usually best seen from Federation Square. This really is a wonderful time to be in Melbourne.
